Tooth Extraction in Rancho Mirage, Palm Desert, Palm Spring, Coachella Valley, Cathedral City, La Quinta, Desert Hot Springs, Yucca Valley, Indian Wells

Dental care is aimed at preserving natural teeth. In some cases, when the tooth has reached a stage where it no longer can be preserved or protected, the dentist may recommend tooth extraction. This can help prevent dental problems. Necessary post-operative steps are taken after tooth extraction to ensure that there is improvement in oral health. Tooth extraction is a procedure that can be performed using simple dental instruments. In complex cases, a surgery may have to be performed to remove the problematic tooth. At our Rancho Mirage office, we perform a range of dental treatments to cure infection and protect the healthy smiles of our patients. Tooth extraction is something our dentist recommends only when found that removing the tooth can benefit the patient.

When is tooth extraction necessary?

It is important for patients to know that, be it trauma or dental infection, the dentist does everything possible to restore and protect the natural tooth in the first place. Tooth extraction is suggested only in cases where the tooth cannot be preserved and its existence poses serious threat to oral health. The extraction is done to prevent dental diseases and improve oral health. Following are some of the cases where tooth extraction may be recommended.

  • Severely decayed tooth where the root is infected
  • In cases where there is an extra tooth growth, which is leading to orthodontic problems
  • Extraction of impacted wisdom teeth
  • Broken tooth

Tooth extraction process

Dentists firstly numb the extraction site using local anesthesia. The extraction can be performed in two ways. One procedure involves use of few dental instruments to pull out the tooth. The second method is surgical removal. Dental elevators and forceps are the instruments that help in extraction of tooth. The procedure is painless and the dentist may fill the socket with suitable material after tooth extraction.

If the tooth is in a complex position or is brittle by nature, dentists may suggest surgical extraction. In this case, an incision is made in the gums to access the tooth and carefully extract it without harming the supporting bone structure. Wisdom tooth extraction is one of the most popular ways of extracting tooth surgically.

Wisdom tooth extraction

The third molars are the last pairs of teeth to erupt in the oral cavity. Most often, these teeth do not erupt properly and are capable of causing problems to dental health. Wisdom teeth that erupt at angles to the supporting bone are called as impacted teeth. In some cases these teeth are known to grow horizontally. As recommended by the American Dental Association, such impacted teeth should be removed when they cause pain, infection and gum diseases, lead to formation of cysts or tumors or tooth decay. The extraction of impacted wisdom tooth requires a surgery to be performed. Local numbing agent is during the course for a painless treatment. Patients can lead a healthier life after the extraction of impacted wisdom teeth.

Extraction process

The impacted wisdom teeth can partially erupt or can stay beneath the gum-line. They create pathways that can attract bacteria leading to dental infection. Our dentists firstly set a treatment plan based on the position of the impacted tooth.

The first case is where the tooth has partially erupted from the gum-line. The dentist makes an incision in the gums and raises the gum flap. The tooth is removed using a dental elevator. The gums are sutured back after the process.

In the second case, the complexity of the tooth position may require some part of bone surrounding the tooth to be removed. This helps in proper extraction of tooth using the elevators. Dentists use dental materials to fill the empty space in the supporting bone and suture the gums after the procedure.

In cases where the tooth has not erupted from the supporting bone, dentists firstly open the flap of gums and create an opening in the supporting bone. The tooth is sectioned and removed carefully piece by piece using appropriate dental instruments. The dentist fills the area with suitable bone substitute and sutures the gums back after the process.
